How it works and why it matters

Payment amount conversion translates a commercial amount into a payment-asset quantity using a rate, precision and rounding policy. The quote must identify what the payer needs to send and when the quote expires. Tiny decimal differences may create underpayment if the conversion policy is unclear.

Practical decision points

Implement conversion in exact decimal or integer units. If a stablecoin has six decimals, 1.234567 tokens is 1,234,567 base units; rounding to a floating-point binary number can miscompare values near the invoice threshold. Price sources and quote timestamps should be retained so that the accepted amount can be reproduced during a dispute. A pay amount can also incorporate an explicitly disclosed processing surcharge, network-fee responsibility or tolerance policy, but those components must not be silently mixed. When a quote expires after broadcast, the business needs a rule for late funds instead of retroactively inventing a rate.
