What does Refund Status mean?

Refund Status is the current operational label describing the progress or outcome of a crypto refund request and its associated transaction.

How it works in practice

Refund status describes progress through the merchant's refund workflow, not just whether a blockchain transaction exists. A useful model separates requested, validated, approved, funds reserved, submitted, confirmed, completed, failed and review-required states. Transitions need evidence: human approval for authorization, transaction ID for submission and chain confirmation for finality. If the outgoing transfer remains uncertain, the status should stay pending or under investigation rather than automatically reverting to 'not sent'.

Limits and common misunderstandings

A provider timeout does not establish failure, and a refund shown as 'initiated' is not necessarily available to the recipient. Partial refunds and fees should retain their own amounts and histories rather than rewriting the original purchase total.

Additional implementation considerations

The state machine should prohibit unsafe backward transitions. For example, a confirmed payout should not return to 'unsubmitted' because an old callback arrived late. If a chain reorganization challenges a recent confirmation, use an explicit review state rather than deleting history. Customer-facing status labels may be simpler than internal states, but their meanings must remain truthful: 'approved' is not 'sent', and 'sent' is not always 'received'.
