Payment Confirmation Record
Pronunciation: PAY-muhnt kon-fer-MAY-shun REK-erd
Also known as: Crypto Payment Confirmation Record
Definition
Payment Confirmation Record is an auditable record of the blocks, timestamps, network observations, confirmation counts, and policy decisions used to classify a payment as confirmed. A confirmation record preserves the actual basis for an acceptance decision: transaction identifier, chain, block references, timestamps, observed depth or finality signal, applied policy version, and the decision timestamp.
Overview
Meaning and boundaries
Payment Confirmation Record is an auditable record of the blocks, timestamps, network observations, confirmation counts, and policy decisions used to classify a payment as confirmed. A confirmation record preserves the actual basis for an acceptance decision: transaction identifier, chain, block references, timestamps, observed depth or finality signal, applied policy version, and the decision timestamp. A later audit should be able to reconstruct why a system shipped goods or credited a balance at that moment.
How it works in practice
The monitoring service observes the transaction on the correct chain, resolves its inclusion block, computes the applicable confirmation or finality evidence, and evaluates a policy version. It writes a time-stamped decision containing the transaction reference, block hash or comparable chain evidence, required rule, actual observation, and resulting payment status. A subsequent chain reorganization adds a correcting event; it must not erase the historical decision from the audit trail.
Checks and failure points
Network reorganizations, node disagreements, and policy updates can alter current observations. Keep the original decision evidence and subsequent corrections in an append-only history instead of rewriting past records without explanation.
Operational evidence and decisions
For an invoice paid in several transfers, a separate confirmation record may be needed for each qualifying transaction before the invoice reaches its accepted state. These records should distinguish first observation, chain inclusion, required policy threshold, current status, and any subsequent correction. Support and auditors must be able to trace the outcome to the original evidence rather than a mutable dashboard label.
How it differs from related terms
A transaction hash identifies a broadcast transaction; a confirmation record documents how its inclusion and finality were assessed. Related entries: Crypto Payment Confirmation; Payment Finality Policy; Crypto Payment Transaction Monitoring.
Example
An invoice for $3,000 is accepted after meeting a documented network threshold. Months later, a support team can identify which blocks and policy were used at the time.
Comparison
A transaction hash identifies a broadcast transaction; a confirmation record documents how its inclusion and finality were assessed.
Key Takeaway
Store confirmation evidence and the policy applied to it.
