Definition

A null address is a reserved or conventional blockchain address used to represent no valid recipient, an unset value, or an operation with special meaning. On EVM-compatible networks, the all-zero address is commonly called the zero address and is often used for initialization checks or token mint and burn events. It is not guaranteed to behave identically across networks, and sending funds to it may permanently destroy access.

Overview

A null address is an address value interpreted as absent, invalid, or special by a protocol or application. In many EVM systems, the address containing all zero bytes is used as a sentinel value. Smart contracts may compare an input with this address to determine whether an Account Ownership field, recipient, or contract reference has been initialized.

Token contracts often emit transfers from the null address when tokens are minted and to the null address when tokens are burned. These events are accounting conventions implemented by contract standards; the address does not sign the transaction. Payment systems must also validate network and asset context, because a string treated as null in one environment may be syntactically invalid or meaningful in another.
