Definition

Interoperability is the ability of payment systems, financial institutions, ledgers, APIs, and operational tools to exchange information and process transactions with consistent meaning and predictable outcomes. It requires more than technical connectivity: participants must align data semantics, identifiers, statuses, currencies, timing, security, and exception handling. A connection is not truly interoperable if every party interprets the same field differently. Shared business semantics are as important as shared technical formats.

Overview

Interoperability allows separate systems to participate in one payment process without manual re-entry or proprietary translation at every step. Examples include merchant-to-gateway APIs, provider-to-bank files, cross-border messaging, ledger integration, and blockchain-to-accounting reconciliation.

ISO 20022 provides a common modeling approach, business dictionary, and message catalogue for financial communications. Shared semantics make it easier to map payment initiation, clearing, settlement, cash management, statements, and exception messages across institutions.

Technical interoperability covers transport, authentication, formats, schemas, API behavior, and versioning. Business interoperability covers who the parties are, what status means, which amount is authoritative, and how cut-off, settlement, and reversal rules operate.

Payment integrations should use canonical internal concepts and explicit adapters rather than exposing each provider’s fields throughout the system. This improves mapping of Transaction Record , status, fee, beneficiary, and accounting data while preserving provider-specific evidence.
