Overview

What it means and why it matters

Address rotation means using fresh receiving addresses or periodically replacing operational wallet destinations to improve privacy, accounting separation or risk management. Rotation changes the displayed address, not the blockchain’s history.

How it works in practice

A merchant wallet derives a new address for each invoice and stores the mapping between invoice and derivation index. Monitoring continues for old addresses because customers can pay late or reuse saved instructions. Funds may later be consolidated to treasury wallets under documented rules.

Technical detail without the jargon

Fresh addresses reduce simple address-reuse linking, but amounts, timing, change outputs and off-chain information can still correlate activity. Address derivation and monitoring must survive key rotation and backup recovery. For account-based chains, address rotation may have significant gas and operational costs.

A deeper point to understand

Rotation should be coordinated with merchant payment instructions. Replacing a dashboard’s default address is insufficient when emailed invoices and saved QR codes still circulate. Keep a clear policy for late deposits to retired addresses so funds remain detectable and customer support can explain recovery.

Common mistakes and limitations

Never retire an address from monitoring the moment a checkout expires. An old address may still receive valid funds. Ensure the address belongs to the correct network and keys remain recoverable.

What to check in a real payment system

Monitor previously issued receiving addresses beyond invoice expiry and back up derivation state. Measure whether address reuse actually declines after enabling rotation. Explain that new addresses improve privacy only partially and do not prevent chain-analysis correlation.
